As dawn begins it's usual trek about the horizon, hinting at what was certain to be a refreshingly cool late summer day, a lone wolf pads leisurely past the treeline of dense woodland and gives pause to fill his nostrils with the clean, fresh scent of forest yet relatively undisturbed by humans. Deep golden irises briefly scan the area about him as he moves to position himself atop what he had long since claimed as being 'His' rock. Despite it's rather average rock like characteristics, this was no mere rock as was seen by the untrained eye. To a wolf, this was prime real estate and he considered himself quite the cock of the walk for having made it his own. Well it was not solely his and his alone...it was more of a wolf time share situation if such a thing existed...but twice daily he had sole occupancy, with the exception of Tuesdays and Sundays.

Mombie interjects: "Hold up. Wolf time share? What the fuck is this? We're off to a rather ridiculous start don't you think?"

Narrator: "Don't look at me, this is your brainchild. I'm just reading what's in front of me."

Mombie takes a large swig of her tea, already gone cold, her eyes narrowing a bit before making a rolling motion in the air with her hand, signaling for him to continue. "If you insist. That'll teach me to write prior to caffeine intake."

Narrator: Clears throat, eyes Mombie for a long moment as if expecting her to change her mind, then continues.

This particular rock jutted far outward from atop the towering bluffs which formed a massive crescent of pale gray stone, offering any who stood upon it a gloriously panoramic view of not only the cliffs themselves, but the deep blue green expanse of ocean which the half basin opened to. After several moments spent listening to the calming roar of waves caressing what was a magnificent yet rocky shoreline, the wolf shifts his gaze downward, the act even now after so many years of this morning ritual causing a split seconds vertigo at this dizzying height. Already, despite the early hour, the base of the canyon was dotted by patches of light as the denizens of the small town below began readying themselves for the day. The scent of wood smoke tickles at his nose as it wafts upward and at this, the wolf makes an about face and sets off yet again with a now purposeful stride.

Some three quarters of an hour later, having navigated the steep downward slope of the narrow crevice which served as walking trail for forest creatures and a handful of local humans who knew of its existence, the wolf finds himself at the outskirts of Oakhaven. Pausing a moment, he glances first left, then right, having learned long ago that the majority of humans did not react kindly to finding themselves in close proximity to large copper gray wolves who matched them in weight. Seeing the coast to be clear, he gracefully leaps over the wood beamed fence that served as demarcation of the town's cliff side perimeter and plods off in his usual direction, his internal clock telling him that he was right on schedule.

The familiar building with it's worn brick exterior and white trimmed windows soon comes into view. He spares a brief glance over his shoulder, golden eyes glinting in the rays of what was now a nearly risen sun, and spies 'His' rock, seeming so very small from this distance. The wolf knows that even when he returns to it's smooth, gray surface long after dark it will still retain some warmth from the day's sunlight. Until then however, he had a job to do, and it was one that he took quite seriously. His paws still moist with dew, he pads over to the familiar large Oak tree with its gnarled branches and dense leaves now fluttering about in the cool, brine scented breezes. Upon reaching the tree's wide trunk, the wolf travels once about it's girth allowing the rough bark to finally lend relief to the itch which had been plaguing his right hip then hunkers down, the tree now positioned between his large frame and the building itself. "Any minute now." He thinks to himself, then awaits the arrival of 'His' human. Not that the woman knew She was his...but he knew and that was the way of the situation.

As for the wolf's story...you'll have to wait and see.

  4. This is an interesting format. Considering the BS that Instagram's been pulling lately with algorithms, this might be an alternate route for our English House Chronicles!
